Dr Vijidha Rajkumar Presents Research on Prone Transpsoas Fusion at SSA 2025

O Spine’s Dr Vijidha Rajkumar presents new research on prone transpsoas fusion at L4/5 at the 2025 SSA Meeting, highlighting safety and surgical outcomes.

Perth Presentation and Poster for Spine Society Australasia in May

O Spine is proud to share that Dr Vijidha Shree Rajkumar recently presented her latest research at the 2025 Spine Society of Australia (SSA) Annual Scientific Meeting, contributing to the growing body of knowledge on minimally invasive spine surgery techniques. Her research, titled “Prone Transpsoas Fusion at L4/5”, evaluated the safety, efficacy, and radiological outcomes of this specialised technique through a multi-centre, multi-surgeon study of 100 consecutive patients.

About the Research

The prone transpsoas (PTP) technique allows for a single-position lateral approach to spinal fusion, enabling both anterior and posterior access without repositioning the patient. While the L4/5 level is frequently treated with this method, its unique anatomical challenges demand careful evaluation of outcomes.

Vijidha’s study reported:

  • Significant improvements in lumbar lordosis, segmental lordosis, and disc height post-surgery.

  • Average operative metrics: 165 minutes anesthetic time, 112 minutes total operative time, and 39 minutes for lateral access.

  • Low complication rates, with isolated cases of psoas weakness, haematoma, periprosthetic infection, and wound complications.

These findings highlight the safety and effectiveness of PTP at the L4/5 level, offering confidence to surgeons managing complex spinal pathologies with this minimally invasive approach.

Strengthening Australia’s Role in Advancing Spinal Care

Under the supervision of Professor Brian Owler and Dr Yi Yuen Wang, this research enhances Australia’s contribution to the global conversation on best practices for spinal fusion. It complements ongoing efforts to refine surgical techniques that improve patient outcomes and recovery.

At O Spine, we continue to champion research, education, and innovation in spinal care. Vijidha’s presentation at SSA 2025 reflects this commitment and further cements our leadership in advanced spinal surgery.
